BOWLS: After having the position vacant for some time, Bowls New Zealand has appointed Taranaki's Denis Toon to help galvanise the sport of bowls.
As Community Development Officer (CDO) for region three, Toon will cover the Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu and Hawke's Bay provinces and base himself at Sport Taranaki's offices. The former
general manager of Event Venues Taranaki, Toon says he is looking forward to applying his business skills to the sport.
"I've been around bowls for many years, involved in playing and in club administration, so I've got a running start at this new role.
"All around New Zealand the sport is enjoying a resurgence of popularity, especially among the younger age range from secondary school students to young professionals. My job includes working with clubs to make sure that they are able to ride this wave of popularity and get their share of new players and the revenue and vitality they bring."
Toon is part of a team of six CDOs, introduced two years ago to link national directions ? under a new strategy called OneBowls ? directly to the local network.

The Wanganui RSA women's outdoor bowls section are having an open fours tournament at Laird Park on Monday, March 13. Closing date for this event is March 1 with an entry fee of only $20 per team.
How do I get involved, you ask?
Give Lorraine Bell a call on 343 8224 or 027 279 9972 and she will be pleased to take your entry and ensure a good time is had by all. *******
The annual Academy Fours event was held over the weekend and I am pleased to report that the women of Wanganui East reigned supreme when scything through the tournament unbeaten.
They were rarely troubled and it is a tribute to the tenacity of the combination of Shirley de Barr, Marlene Head, Heather Harding and Doreen Barnes that they were able to win eight games on the trot. ******
Last weekend Clint Park added to his centre title tally by winning the open pairs, not for the first time and at his age not the last.
But I need some information. Apparently his tally now stands at about 16 titles, but there is a player within this centre who has led him to a quarter of them.
I need to know who this bloke is so he can be publicly exposed and with any luck dispel the myth doing the rounds that he wanders around town in a brightly coloured suit with oversized shoes and a red nose.
So dear reader, get onto it, I want emails, I want phone calls, I want texts, I want no stone left unturned to reveal this person and seeing the stakes are so high the ante will be upped.
The day of the chocolate fish is over. There will be something more substantial on offer but you have to be the winner to find out what it is, so good luck and good sleuthing.
