Springvale's Alan Rowland won his first Wanganui open indoor bowls title on Sunday, winning the Dempsey and Forrest Funeral Directors open singles in convincing style in an event full of unpredicted results.
Rowland played superb bowls all day and in the final comprehensively defeated Eastown's Shane Broderson 17-2.
This was a great effort from Broderson who is still only 16 and proves that he has a great future in the game. He also won the trophy for the under-18 player going the furthest.
To get to the final Rowland defeated Maria Klitscher (St Johns) 8-5 in the last eight and Barbara Bull (Eastown) 10-3 in the semi-finals. Bull won the trophy for the woman going the furthest.
Broderson defeated Kevin Coombe (Eastown) 11-10 in the last eight and Lindsay Bourne (Eastown) 12-5 in the semi-finals.
In the other quarter-finals Bull beat Ian Broderson (Eastown) 12-3 and Bourne beat Brent Biggar (Eastown) 9-5.
On Saturday in the open pairs, Eastown's Kevin Coombe and Barbara Bull took the title. This was the first time Coombe has won this event even though he has almost 40 centre titles.
Coombe and Bull defeated Alan Rowland and Maria Klitscher 7-4 in the final. To get to the final Coombe beat the Taranaki team of Warren Scown and Rocky Adams 11-5 in the last eight and the Westmere couple of Mike and Margaret Wakelin 7-4 in the semi-finals, while Rowland beat the Eastown couple of Colin and Beryl Watson 10-2 in the last eight and the Eastown team of Brent Biggar and Cary Pinker 9-8 in the semi-finals.
In the other quarter-finals Biggar beat the Eastown team of Jeffrey Stuart and Carolyn Biggar 8-4 and Wakelin beat the Carlton team of Garry Petersen and Les Heywood 10-9.
