The generosity of strangers has turned Jansen Pears' tears into cheers.
It comes after the Wanganui Chronicle shared the story of the theft of the 11-year-old's new BMX bike.
Jansen's dad bought him the bike for Christmas but on Saturday, December 30, it was stolen in broad daylight fromthe driveway of Jansen's home in Aramoho.
His mum Wendy Coley said it was "absolutely gutting" that someone had taken the bike, climbing over shut gates and stealing it from the far end of the driveway even though Ms Coley's step-father was at home mowing the lawns.
Ms Coley appealed via social media for help to track down the bike and also spoke with the Chronicle in the hope that someone may have seen the distinctive Haro BMX which is brown with yellow wheels.
The story of Jansen's plight struck a chord with many people, bringing offers of assistance with replacement bikes and fundraising from around New Zealand and well-wishes from as far afield as Canada.
Ms Coley said they had accepted an offer of a replacement bike for Jansen.
"He has a big smile on his face and is so excited and it makes me feel good to know that there are so many kind people willing to help."
