Some Wanganui owners are sure to be affected by a worldwide recall of a number of Toyota models over concerns about a possible fault with the driver's and front passenger's airbags.
The recall involves 26,050 Corolla, Picnic, Yaris and RAV4 vehicles in New Zealand, while globally it means a check being made on more than five million vehicles.
Toyota NZ customer services general manager Spencer Morris said the airbags were made by Takata, an outside supplier. Takata also supplies airbags to a number of other Japanese and European motor manufacturers, which have been the subject of recalls in recent years.
Mr Morris said the recall was due to the possible abnormal deployment of the airbags. He was not aware of any incidents in New Zealand involving faulty airbags.
Vehicles specifically affected by the recall in New Zealand are Yaris and RAV4 manufactured between 2003-05, for driver's side airbags. There are 2760 RAV4 and 3122 Yaris vehicles that are subject to the recall. A further 20,168 Corolla, Picnic and Yaris, manufactured between 2001-07, are being recalled to have their passenger side airbags checked.
