Town goes Greek for Masters Games

Dust off your togas and locate that laurel wreath - the Masters Games is going Greek.

The call has gone out in Wanganui for anything Greek to be donated to the games organisers in line with the theme of the event, Greek Olympia.

The 2013 New Zealand Masters Games are being held in Wanganui in February and locals are being asked to help decorate the Games Village. Water urns, togas, costumes, pillars, plinths, olive tress, pergolas, Olympic style torches, swathes of cotton, silk fabric in blue, white or gold, vines, pedestals, garden statues and columns are all being sought.

Also wanted are tall planters, Roman shields, flags, olive and laurel wreaths, red ribbons and rope, particularly tug of war strength.

Games organisers are urging residents to take this chance for a clear out and donate anything in Greek or Roman style.

Items provided will be well looked after and returned if not being donated. However, valuable or delicate items are not suitable.

Masters Games manager Mike Cronin said organisers were lucky that they had such a supportive community in Wanganui, and very creative residents.

"So we are getting the word out in the hope that people dig out some suitable treasures."
