Home cooking is the theme of Gloria Dickins' Sweet Pea Cafe, which opened in Ohakune yesterday.
She said the cafe in Goldfinch St had been a long-time dream, adding: "I've always wanted to have my own cafe and set my own menu."
Eating at the Sweet Pea "will be likegoing to your granny's house".
The food will feature old-fashioned favourites such as proper club sandwiches, mince on toast and asparagus rolls - and all the bread will be home-made.
The granny theme is evident, from the whimsical pictures on the walls, including one of the children's poem The Owl and the Pussycat, and framed black-and-white photographs from Ms Dickins' childhood as well as her own children.
She said the cafe was all about feeding people sustaining meals, including a range of gourmet pies. "I really think pies are important. I can't understand why some cafes think they're not the thing at all."
The gourmet pies will include pork and kumara, sweet-and-sour pork and chicken and mushroom (which will be a large portobello mushroom in the bottom of the pie with creamed chicken spooned on top).
Every Friday, fish will be the meal of the day, like it was years ago.
