It was prizegiving at Mitre 10 Mega last week when store owner Hayden Gibson presented three $250 store credit vouchers won in the Mitre 10 Heartland Competition, Half-Time Pass Challenge.
The prizes came from half-time contests held during the first two home games of the season, in which age-grade teamstook part in the pass challenge.
On August 25 it was the U8/U9 years, where teams had to pass the ball the length of the field and back without dropping it. The first team to complete the task with all their members back in the "in-goal" area won the game. Pirates took the honour. On September 15 the U10 years took to the field at half-time and Marist was declared winner.
A third voucher was presented to Tawhero School for making banners. "Tawhero School won the banner competition when Wanganui had the semi-final versus Thames Valley. They made a number of banners," says Tawhero School principal Chris Dibben. Chris was at Cooks Gardens early to display them in the Whiskas stand.
"We are a sponsor of the Wanganui Rugby Union, and nationally, of the Heartland Championship," says Hayden. "For us it's about giving back to young sports people so we do the half-time programme and try and get kids out there. Also this year, in conjunction with the Rugby Union, we donated a rugby ball to every junior player in Wanganui, everyone from intermediate years down." That worked out at about 1800 rugby balls. "It's good to get out and support Wanganui," he says.
