A major police operation in Whanganui, dubbed "Operation Swarm", resulted in multiple people being charged, cars being seized or impounded and nearly 150 infringement notices issued.

Central District Police said in a statement it had "successfully disrupted" anti-social road users in Whanganui on Saturday night, targeting a "planned boy racer event".

Whanganui Area Commander Ross Grantham said police estimated between 400 and 450 people were part of the group, with attendees from across the district.

"We planned to meet them as they came into town and congregated," Grantham said.

The first location officers deployed to was the New World car park on Victoria Ave just after 9pm on Saturday.

"The car park was pretty much full, with others parked up on the roadside," Grantham said.

Between 9pm and 3am, two arrests were made.

Grantham said one was arrested for failing to stop and the other was for breach of bail.

Nearly 150 infringements were issued which Grantham said was for anything from cars not being up to standard, to seatbelt infringements or to speeding.

Ten vehicles were impounded and 500 people were breath tested.

Of that breath tested, five failed over the course of the evening and would appear in court at a later date.

"I don't believe there were any big burnout events on Saturday night, so we certainly disrupted that," Grantham said.

Operation Swarm involved more than 70 officers from across the district working alongside bailiffs from the Ministry of Justice and vehicle inspectors from VTNZ, with Horizons Regional Council also providing financial support for the operation from its road police budget.

"We won't tolerate the anti-social behaviour on our roads and we will continue to target people who are intent on offending," Whanganui Area Prevention Manager Inspector Neil Forlong said.

Grantham said it was an important community issue.

"They create mayhem for the communities they conduct their activities in because of their dangerous and noisy driving behaviour," he said.

"No matter how much we advertise their behaviours not being tolerated because we want to save their lives, they continue to ignore our pleas to be sensible and drive sensibly.

"We are the people attending their crashes and letting their families know that they've been seriously injured or killed in a car crash.

"And until we get through to these people, it will, unfortunately, continue to happen."

Six cars were seized by bailiffs for overdue fines and reparation after they were stopped by police on driving matters. A further four cars were impounded under the Land Transport Act.

Five people were charged with driving with excess breath alcohol.

One person was charged with failing to stop for police and another with breach of bail.

Seven people were either forbidden to drive or suspended from driving due to behaviour on the night or excess demerits.

Fifteen unsafe vehicles were written off the road and one stolen car was recovered.

Almost 150 infringement notices were handed out and more than 500 people were breath tested.
