Yesterday morning brought some relief for hard-hit Wanganui residents, with petrol companies dropping the price of petrol by 4c a litre, bringing the price of 91-octane below $2 for the first time since January.
There was good news for diesel users too, with that fuel dropping by 3c a litre.
BP dropped its prices yesterday morning, selling 91-octane at $1.999 per litre, 95-octane at $2.079, and diesel at $1.419.
Z Energy, which owns the Shell retail network, also dropped petrol prices to the same levels and diesel to $1.409.
When the Wanganui Chronicle visited the city's petrol pumps yesterday morning, evidence of the price drop was already in effect at some service stations. By mid-morning, BP on Taupo Quay had dropped its 91-octane price to $1.999 per litre, although diesel was sitting at $1.459.
Shell on Dublin St was in line with the price announcement, while Caltex on Victoria Ave was still selling 91-octane at $2.069 per litre, and diesel at 1.449.
Gull on Victoria Ave was selling its regular plus fuel at 1.979-per litre and diesel at 1.399 per litre. Lower international prices were credited with the drop in price.
Yesterday's price drops, the second this week after petrol fell by 3c on Monday, meant 91-octane petrol was under $2 a litre for the first time since January.
In early May, the price reached a whopping $2.22 a litre.
