Work to repair stormwater pipes in one of Whanganui's busier suburban streets has been extended by another month. Contractors are fixing underground pipes in Glasgow St, damaged during floods in June last year.
Some of the pipework under the street, between Bell St and Harrison St, was damaged, causing a
sink hole in the road. The damage was bad enough that it could not be repaired immediately and for the last six months the affected area was cordoned off.
Kritzo Venter, senior stormwater engineer for the Whanganui District Council, said the pipes were 5m under the road and there was no quick fix available. Mr Venter said the job had been slowed down by rains a fortnight ago, which saw groundwater getting into the worksite.
The work was scheduled to be completed this week but that timeline has gone out to April 8. Traffic is being detoured through streets around the site.
