No sooner had grass seed been applied to the reshaped Great North Rd hillside than along came Mother Nature with her big watering can? to upset the applecart and raise the eyebrows of Wanganui motorists.
This is where a substantial part of the hillside fell away a few weeks ago in conjunction with the construction of a cycle/walkway.
It's a short distance uphill from the scary Victoria Ave/London St/railway junction.
The hydro-seeding technique gave the site a striking green colour (at least it's not shocking pink) and the hill stabilisation process would have been well under way but for a belligerent burst of wet weather in recent days.
The project's progress and tribulations have been very much in the public eye. Transit NZ regional project manager Chris Jordan said yesterday the contractor would be back to repair the damage ? and further work was programmed anyway. "It'll green over in a month or so," he said.
A more soothing green, hopefully.
