Wanganui Mahi Uku clay artist Wi Taepa is one of the artists showing his works at the biggest-ever showing of contemporary Maori art opening this week in Porirua.
More than 200 Maori painters, clay and glass workers, carvers, jewellers, ta moko, musicians, story-tellers and film-makers' works will be on display
at the biennial Maori Art Market at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua city.
Artists Bunmei Okabe (Japan), Grahame Sydney (New Zealand), Dan Namingha (USA), Danny Eastwood (Australia), Filipe Tohi (NZ Tongan), Fatu Feu'u (NZ Samoan), and documentary-maker Peter Coates will be welcomed at Pataka Museum in Porirua at 6.30pm on Tuesday.
Other invited guests are Maori artists Beverly Rhodes, Maria Brockhill, Barry Te Whatu, Norm Heke, Regan Balzer and Tanu Aumua. They will be among those who will be given the first choice of the work on sale at the Maori Art Market grand opening Wednesday at 6pm in the Te Rauparaha Arena.
The opening will feature food, wine, fashion and opera singers.
