Wanganui's Mayor Michael Laws has ruled out standing again for the district's mayoralty but has not given away the prospect of challenging for a district council seat or a seat on the Whanganui District Health Board.
His statement comes in the wake of news his partner Leonie Brookhammer has been appointed chief executive of Natural Fertility NZ. She takes up her new position at the end of May.
The position was based in Wellington and with extensive travel likely.
He said given his added domestic responsibilities he would not be seeking the mayoralty again in the October elections.
"We will be maintaining two residences, one in Wellington and one in Wanganui. It's going to make the family dynamics fairly interesting but the nature of my media jobs allows a flexibility that I am very fortunate to have," he said.
"I have not ruled out standing for the district council or district health board and the children's schooling will still be based in Wanganui.
"I'm very proud of what Leo has achieved.
"She has supported me through thick and thin these past three years and now it is my turn to play 'Mr Mum' which is a position I am really going to enjoy."
Ms Brookhammer would not be seeking re-election to Horizons District Council and will be commuting every weekend back to their Wanganui family home.
