This exuberant jazz trio will be performing the music of George Gershwin and Cole Porter in April as part of Chamber Music New Zealand's 2016 Encompass Series.
They will play in five centres up and down the length of New Zealand. Their concert in Whanganui is presented by the Chamber Music
Wanganui in association with the Foundation Music School, Wanganui Collegiate School.
Rolling around the hoods and hangouts of the capital metropolis since 2011, The Jelly Rolls have stewed up a flavoursome brew.
Concocted with the meaty beats of Scottish import, drummer John Rae, and the tangy upright playing of bassist Daniel Yeabsley, the resplendent Ben Wilcock takes centre stage on piano, suffusing Harlem Stride and Boogie Woogie as well as the influences of jazz piano greats, such as Fats Waller, Erroll Garner, Jelly Roll Morton and Art Tatum.
Formed as a result of a weekly residency at Wellington's Embassy theatre in 2011, The Jelly Rolls released their debut album Sneaky Weasel in August 2014 in the form of a USB credit card.
It included five original works as well as original interpretations of 1930s stride piano trio classics. They have entertained audiences at the last two Wellington Jazz festivals and have been in high demand since the album's release, recording for Radio NZ, performing at festivals, hosting cabarets and making appearances at venues all over New Zealand. The Jelly Rolls perform at the Main School Hall, Wanganui Collegiate School on Thursday, April 28 at 7.30pm
