The Wanganui Jazz Club welcomes back pianist Kevin Clark and singer Fran Barton to their monthly meeting at the RSA on Sunday, August 7 with an unusual and interesting theme, Jazz with a classical bent ... or bent classical?
Kevin describes the show as "an entertaining evening of well-known songs borrowed,
adapted and plagiarised from the classics, such as Baubles Bangles and Beads from Borodin, I'm Always Chasing Rainbows from Chopin, Full Moon and Empty Arms and All By Myself from Rachmaninov.
"The group will explore a wide range of music from 'the other side' - with new flavours from jazz and swing, to Latin and hip hop."
Included in the band are Lance Philip on drums and Aaron Stewart on bass, two of Wellington's finest rhythm section players. This popular programme has been performed twice in Wellington and in Palmerston North.
Kevin brings his recently published music memoirs, From the Bandstand, in which he recounts his many weird and wacky escapades over 65 years in the music game.
Doors open at 5.30pm for supper, with the music starting at 6.30pm. Members pay $10 and non members (always welcome) $20. Memberships available at the door.
JAZZ IS...alive and well in Whanganui, as witnessed by 200 of us at High School last Tuesday when American master of the alto saxophone Dick Oates was the guest of the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. What a fabulous concert! Thanks to Jeanette Jones and her team for hosting the event.
