Holiday fun at Whanganui YMCA

Children and staff at the Whanganui YMCA holiday programme took advantage of the warm, dry weather to get out and play some games in the sun yesterday.

Co-ordinator Ben Androutsos said around 60 children had attended the programme every day this week.

"We didn't expect to start the programme until next week but the demand was there so we are up and running," he said.

"We did cooking this morning - the children have been making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pizzas."

Mr Androutsos said staff had taken half an hour to apply sunblock before leading the children in some good, old-fashioned games in the YMCA grounds.

Simon Says, Cat and Mouse and dodgeball were proving popular with the different age groups, while some members of Pasifika Flight netball team were shooting goals on the newly refurbished court.

"The court is open to the public and people can come and use it any time," said Mr Androutsos.

"We ask that people go home when it gets dark so they don't disturb the neighbours."

Jakyb Smith was trying to find a gap in a game of cat and mouse at the YMCA.

The YMCA holiday programme will continue next week with on site and day trip activities for children aged 5-13 years, the annual Camp Raukawa for 8-13 year-olds and the Breakaway Programme for 11-17 year-olds.
