Halcombe artist brings abstract landscapes to Whanganui

Changing landscapes are the subject of a new exhibition coming to Whanganui Fine Arts Gallery Photo/Bevan Conley.

David Taylor's abstract landscapes have enchanted visitors to a number of galleries around the Whanganui region.

Whanganui Fine Arts Gallery, in Taupo Quay, will be hosting the Halcombe-based artist's Land Cycles exhibition which opens next Friday.

Taylor's mixed media landscapes are a visual feast of beautiful colours but there is a serious side to the work says the artist.

"I work around the wider region and I see how the coastline is changing and I record those changes in my work."

Taylor is the art teacher at Feilding High School and says he enjoys the balance of teaching and working on his own paintings.

"I do love teaching and I think it inspires my own work as well," he says.

The artist develops his paintings over a period of time, creating layered surfaces, which he sometimes re-works by removing or applying layers.

Taylor has previously exhibited at Space Gallery in Whanganui as well the Barbershop Gallery in Marton.

Originally from England, Taylor has lived in Halcombe since 1987 and likes to travel the countryside finding inspiration when time allows.

David Taylor Land Cycles opens at Fine Arts Whanganui Gallery, 17 Taupo Quay on Friday May 18.
