A fire at Scrap Metal Wanganui's yard in Rogers St, Castlecliff is continuing to keep the Fire Service occupied this morning.

The fire service was called out to the blaze at about 9.30 this morning and worked for an hour to put it out, but a second blaze 200 metres away erupted at about 10.45.

Black acrid smoke from burning tyres in the used car scrap metal spewed from the scene over the northern part of the Castlecliff suburb in Wanganui and the black plume was seen as far away as Maxwell,  25km west of the city.

Two teams from the Wanganui Fire Service battled through the smoke in extremely hot conditions before the first fire was brought under control. About 10,000 litres of water was used in that first hour.
