Fake gun in shooting

The man who was shot twice by police in central Whanganui last week has appeared in court.

It's also been revealed the gun he pointed at police was a replica.

Wattie Adolf Kahu appeared in Whanganui District Court yesterday facing charges including burglary, aggravated burglary and kidnapping. He entered no plea.

The 49-year-old limped in and out of the dock, muttered towards the public gallery and waved as he left.

Firearms charges were withdrawn by police and Judge David Cameron remanded Kahu in custody to reappear on April 12 for pleas to be entered.

The incident on the morning of March 24 involved armed police and dog handlers in a sweep through the Plymouth St area in central Whanganui.

Plymouth St and neighbouring streets were cordoned off for some hours. Kahu was shot by police after allegedly presenting a firearm at officers.

Police have since confirmed the firearm was a replica.

In relation to the incident, police are seeking information to locate a black mountain bike left in the area of Bell, Plymouth, Dublin and Niblett streets overnight on Thursday last week.
