CEMETERY CIRCUIT: Heads Rd Cemetery, resting place of many of the city's ancestors, pictured on the one occasion each year when it is heavily frequented by the living - during the Cemetery Circuit motorcycle races on Boxing Day. It will be quieter than this for Wednesday's Summer Programme tour.

The Whanganui Summer Programme has scores of options for people to explore the wider region and try new experiences. Bookings can be made at the Whanganui i-SITE Visitors' Centre, 31 Taupo Quay, phone 349 0508 or 0800 926 426, 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday and 9am-4pm weekends and public holidays. The Chronicle will run a daily advice on upcoming events and trips. The programme runs until January 31.

Kai Iwi to Castlecliff
Beach Walk
Today, January 18
Join Department of Conservation staff and enjoy the beautiful 10km beach walk from Mowhanau (Kai Iwi) to Castlecliff Domain, where a sausage sizzle awaits you. BYO snacks and drink for the walk plus warm clothing, jacket and suitable footwear. Depart midday, return 4.30pm. Adult $15; child $5, includes sausages. Numbers limited; bookings essential at the i-SITE.

Evening Talk: Whanganui - Colonial Settlement or Imperial Garrison
Tomorrow, January 19
Using photos from our past, local historian Kyle Dalton will look at the role of the military in the development of Whanganui. From its original colonial settlers in the 1840s, many of whom were military men, and up to World War I, Whanganui's social and military histories were intertwined. Time: 7.30pm at the Davis Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum, Watt St. Adult $4; child $2. No booking necessary, although numbers are limited to 200 attendees. i-SITE phone 349 0508

Heads Rd Cemetery
Wednesday, January 20
Spend 1 hours with Huia Kirk hearing some of the stories of the city's ancestors. BYO snacks and drink, warm clothes and rainwear if necessary. Depart: 2pm from the Main entrance to the Heads Rd Cemetery, Guyton St; finish approximately 3.30pm. Adult $5; child $3. Numbers limited; bookings essential at the i-SITE.

Shadow Drawing Workshop
Wednesday, January 20
Explore the art of shadow drawing at the Whanganui Regional Museum, using shapes and objects from the cultural and natural history of Whanganui. All ages. Meet 1pm at the Whanganui Regional Museum, Watt St. $2 per person. Numbers limited; bookings essential at the i-SITE.

Whangamomona
Thursday, January 21
Visit the once-busy frontier town of Whangamomona, now a tourist destination. Travel via Stratford and the Forgotten World Highway. We have lunch at the Whangamomona Hotel with time to explore this historic village. Back home via Stratford. BYO morning and afternoon tea. Depart 8am; return approximately 6.45pm.
