Documentary from iconic filmmaker

A documentary by Ken Loach is this week's offering from the Whanganui Film Society.

For its penultimate screening, the Whanganui Film Society turns to veteran director, Ken Loach.

The Spirit of '45 evokes the collective spirit that won World War II, carried over into the 1945 Labour election victory and welfare states policies in the UK.

Time Out described it as "a lament, a celebration and a wake-up call".

Helen Marie O'Connell from the Whanganui Film Society said Loach is an "unapologetic socialist".

"The film is not intended to be an objective journalistic account of the times, but a nostalgic look back on a different era which we could learn from.

"Understandably, the film has drawn praise from those on the left - and criticism from those on the right. It does what Loach set out to do, however," Ms O'Connell said.

The veteran director won the Palme d'Or this year for his feature film I, Daniel Blake.

The Spirit of '45 will screen on November 21 at 7pm, at the Davis Theatre. You must be a member to attend the screening.
