Medical mistakes, different systems around the country, and the difficulty getting on the transplant list are three problems a renal dialysis patient raised at a health board meeting yesterday.
The patient addressed Whanganui District Health Board members, sharing his story with them about being diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. The
man was placed on peritoneal dialysis, and later received a kidney transplant.
He spoke about a few occasions where nurses at the Whanganui and Palmerston North hospitals put antibiotics in the wrong bag for him. He also spoke about having to go to a hospital in Auckland with peritonitis and having to navigate completely different processes.
He felt it would be better for the whole country to have "compatible systems".
Other issues the patient touched on involved having to travel to and from Palmerston North three times a week when he was placed on hemodialysis, and how difficult it was to get on to the transplant list.
