Design student draws delight from sweet sounds of cornet

"Music and design, it's all good."

That's 19-year-old graphic design student and cornet player Bradley Mancer's life as he prepared to head off for a week-long practice with the National Youth Brass Band (NYBB) in Waikanae.

The NYBB will be in Wanganui on February 7 performing at an evening gala concert at the Central Baptist Church.

That afternoon the band will give a performance for City College students.

Mancer, now in his second year studying graphic design at Massey University in Wellington, also plays for the Wellington Brass Band and the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band.

He was selected for NYBB in November following a video audition he submitted.

"Anyone under 23 can audition. They want to hear technique and you're given audition music."

Mancer has played the cornet for seven years.

"I'm hooked, I just enjoy it."

The former St Annes and Wanganui High School student says the cornet is a sweet-sounding instrument used more for hymns.
