A young male trail bike rider is dead, a teenage girl rider is seriously injured and a third male rider has a badly broken arm after the annual Desert Storm motor bike trailbike ride in the foothills of Mt Ruapehu at the weekend.
The man who died, in his 20s, fell from his bike about 11am on Saturday, Constable Dylan Hovelle of Ohakune Police said.
Organiser Epic Events said the annual two-day event would continue.
However, the spokesman would not comment on Saturday's death.
No further details about the dead rider have been released.
Yesterday, the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called in after the girl rider received serious injuries after falling off her bike and was taken to Wanganui Hospital.
A young male rider with a broken arm also had to be admitted to hospital.
According to the organiser's website, the two-day ride in the foothills of Mt Ruapehu features 130km of trail, camping, catering and evening entertainment.
Trails include forestry, creeks, hill climbs and firebreaks.
It attracts around 1000 riders a day.
