Air Chathams' DC3 Powhaitere will be a special guest at Whanganui over Vintage Weekend.
The Douglas DC3 has a long history and this particular aircraft saw service in World War II and is still operational. That makes it the only surviving RNZAF World War II veteran aircraft still in frontline service and this weekend it will be flying in the skies over Whanganui, offering scenic flights.
Saturday scenic flights will leave between noon and 5pm while Sunday and Monday scenic flights will leave between 10am and 3pm. Flights will go ahead when there are enough passengers for each flight, weather permitting. Flights are 30 minutes each and tickets are $85 for adults, $65 for children and can be purchased on the day from the airport.
While the DC3 is here it is an ideal time for people to get a better view and have a look around at the under-restoration flight control tower.
Lynn Annear of The Wanganui Airport Control Tower Restoration Group says the tower will be open to the public on Saturday from midday until 5pm, and on Sunday and Monday from 10am till 3pm. It will be the perfect place to see the DC3 take off and land.
