Yvonne Evans was watching television when her neighbours say they heard two cars racing in the street outside.
It was 10pm on Saturday and moments later a car failed to take the Peakes/Springvale Rd corner and ploughed into her house.
Driven by a teenage girl, the car mounted the footpath, took out
the Evans' letterbox and part of the hedge, and slammed into the bathroom wall, which shunted the spa bath into the hand basin.
As the vehicle spun, it scattered patio furniture out of the way and smashed through a glass sliding door into the dining room.
"I saw the lights and thought it was my son, and then there was a strange noise," a shocked Ms Evans said yesterday.
The next moment, she saw the left-hand side of the car smash through the glass door.
Mrs Evans said her heart was pounding as she watched a teenage girl get out of the car.
In a short time her front lawn was teeming with teenagers, she said.
She called the police, who asked her if she knew whether the driver was okay and if she could see the car's number plate.
"I could not see because the car was stuck in the wall and I was afraid to go outside with all those people standing on my lawn."
She did pluck up the courage and went out through the laundry on to the front lawn and relayed the information to the police.
Officers were quickly on the scene, Mrs Evans said.
A gaping hole was left once the car was removed. Police called a glazier for her.
In the cold light of day yesterday morning, Mrs Evans saw the true extent of the structural damage to her dining room and bathroom walls.
Wanganui police were not available to comment on their investigation into the accident.
