A first-time entrant is the supreme winner in the
Wanganui Registered Master Builders 2010
House of the Year awards. Marton-based company Rob Peters Builder Ltd
took out the Placemakers Supreme Award at the
1970s-themed dinner on Saturday at the War
Memorial Hall. The rural four-bedroom house near Bulls built
by the company took out the new home $1
million-$2 million category, as well as four of six
lifestyle awards.
"I feel pretty good about winning - pretty
surprised, actually," said owner Robert Peters. Careful attention to hand-crafted woodworking
details such as tongue and groove, were what
made the house special, he said. "It was very detailed and it took about nine
months." The judges said "everything about the house
was stunning". "From the bedrooms, kitchen and living areas to
the gardens and swimming pool outside. "The house has been well-crafted using
traditional weatherboard and timber
construction that is in keeping with the feel of
this character home." The house owners did not want to be identified. The company has been going for around 15
years and has built houses throughout the
Rangitikei, Hawke's Bay and Wellington. Mr Peters employs two tradesmen and one
apprentice. The house is a finalist in the national awards
next month.
