The silence spoke volumes as the Whanganui community gathered at the Handspan peace sculpture in Queen's Park for a peace vigil.

About 150 people lit candles, shed tears, shared smiles, held hands and comforted one another as they sat and stood in silence on Friday evening to remember the victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings.

Representatives of the Muslim community and Multicultural Council thanked the community for their support since the tragedy and for attending the peace vigil.

The vigil followed on from the Whanganui Unity March held earlier on Friday.
