More than $163,000 has trickled back into the Whanganui sporting community from gaming machines administered by the New Zealand Community Trust.
In grants doled out by the NZCT this year, seven Whanganui organisations with a sporting focus have benefitted from the funds generated by gaming machines, with Hockey Wanganui receiving the lion's share.
NZCT awarded Hockey Wanganui $130,000 towards turf replacement at Gonville Domain, while next highest was the Wanganui Community Sports Centre receiving $10,000 for the redress of the centre floor.
Mosston Primary School was granted $9999 towards purchase and installation of sports goals, the Wanganui Stock Car and Speedway Club $7287.50 towards medical services for speedway meetings, while Gonville Bowling Club benefitted to the tune of $5000 to help pay for a part-time greenkeeper.
At the lower end of the grants were Wanganui City Football Club receiving $2233.52 towards balls and goalkeeper equipment and the Wanganui Agricultural & Pastoral Association's $1820 towards ribbons and sashes and transportation of temporary yards.
Six of the 16 NZCT gaming venues to contribute to grants are Whanganui-based. They include: Caroline's Boatshed, Castlecliff Hotel, Red Lion Inn, Shotz, Stellar Bar and Tandoori Spice Bar.
