Two people are dead after a truck-on-car collision on State Highway 4 near National Park on Monday.
Police confirmed a car driver and passenger, a male and a female, were killed in the crash at Erua, north of Raetihi.
A St John ambulance spokesman said the truck driver was uninjured.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.49am, and the highway was closed between State Highway 49 and State Highway 47 from 9.20am until 1.45pm.
A truck and crane was called in at 10.30am to clear a Mitsubishi Diamante from the road.
Crane operator Colin Fredricksen said it appeared the Mitsubishi was travelling south and lost control as it made a sweeping right turn.
