"Legend sort of goes back where they were brought up in really harsh living conditions."
She said the idea of the birds surviving in difficult conditions was relevant to living with cancer.
"That's sort of where we come from with the flamingos."
Mrs Mancer said the people in their group were "so enthusiastic".
"It's a great bunch of people."
They even had two children, 3 and 5, in the team.
