For those wondering what has happened to Wanganui's time-keeping bells, never fear - they should be back on strike before too long.
The bells in the old Cooks Gardens watchtower and the carillon just above the War Memorial Centre have been eerily silent of late.
However, a spokesman for Wanganui District Council said the Cooks Gardens bells were on hold while maintenance was completed to the operational shed that houses the controls under the tower. Once complete, the controls can be reconnected and the bells put back on song, and this work is scheduled to finish in a few weeks.
The main bell tower and housing at the top both had a substantial renovation just over a year ago.
The carillon bells by the Veterans' Steps in Queen's Park have also been having a bit of down time, thought to be due to minor electrical problems despite regular servicing carried out last month. These are also expected to be soon sorted, and for normal transmission to similarly resume shortly.
