A silent candlelit vigil will be held in honour of refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East.
The vigil will be held at Majestic Square at 6pm tonight.
Thousands of refugees every day are escaping conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq and arriving in Europe, where they hope to find a safe place to live.
Vigil organiser Peter Watson said the event had a double purpose.
"We want to remember those refugees who have died in the process of seeking safety. And we are calling on our government to double the refugee quota so New Zealand can accept some of these people."
