Rangitikei College students Makuni Paulger, 16, and Tori Tuau, 17, have been trialling a new app on their cellphones and no one has told them off for using it at school.
The app NCEAPAL designed by Rangitikei deputy principal Jeff King enables students to track their NCEA credits any time.
"The idea came about when we were talking about students losing track of their credits all the time.
"Our principal, Karene Biggs, said it would be great to have a phone app because students always have their phones with them," Mr King said.
The deputy principal contacted Wasim Talim, a former student now studying in Wellington, and they got to work on developing the app.
"We tried around 15 different versions over six or seven months until we came up with the one we were happy with.
"We outsourced some of the work to India, and I fronted the cost personally."
Makuni and Tori got to test the app and say "easy to use and makes it very easy to keep track of their progress. You can easily see how close you are to a pass or a merit and you don't have to ask teachers to look up your credits all the time," Makuni said.
Tori likes the fact that you don't have to be online to access the information.
"Once you have downloaded it you can look at it any time, and you can add credits without having to wait for them to be moderated. The moderation process can take a while and the credits won't appear on the NZQA site until that is done.
"From a selfish point of view, it's good for teachers too. We don't have to be looking them up for students, as it can be very time-consuming."
The app has been downloaded hundreds of times since its launch last week.
