Arielle Carson loves checking out the goodies at the Toy Box toy library.

Arielle Carson has grown up spending hours each week at Hillcrest's Toy Box Toy Library, so it's no surprise she thinks the treasure trove of colourful toys are hers.

The bubbly three-year-old cruises around on one of the ride-on toys, pretending to park it in her "garage". She's one of dozens of children who benefit from the toy library each year.

Hamilton families will have a chance to check out what's on offer at Toy Box for themselves. Toy Box is holding an open day on May 31, which marks the last day of Toy Library Awareness Week, which kicks off tomorrow.

The week aims to increase awareness and understanding of the nature and importance of toy libraries and to encourage community participation in toy libraries. Toy Library Awareness Week incorporates World Play Day, which is held on May 28 each year. Toy Box co-ordinator - and Arielle's mum - Jane Carson says the value of play is experience by members and their children at Toy Box Toy Library.

"We have over 500 good quality toys available for members to borrow to encourage their children's development through play," said Jane. "Families can access a great range of toys to suit the changing needs of their children aged from birth to 6 years.

"The benefits of being a member of a toy library is that children can come in and choose any toy they like and take it out to enjoy at home. Toy Box members just pay a small annual or six-monthly fee to join with no other hire fee charged per item."

Toy Box's open day on Saturday May 31 will run from 9am-noon at the toy library at 122 Masters Ave, beside Hillcrest Chapel.

Usual session times are 9.30-11.30am Tuesdays weekly and Saturdays fortnightly (next Saturday session is tomorrow).
