A cattle truck has rolled on State Highway 23, causing road closures and lengthy diversions for motorists.

The truck crashed and rolled shortly before 7am, police said. Several animals died in the crash.

The driver was not injured.

SH23 is closed between Whatawhata and Raglan, and diversions are in place at Waitetuna Valley Rd and Te Pahu Rd.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Dean Anderson said how long the road would be closed for depended on whether salvage crews would be able to get the truck back on its wheels.

He said a vet had also been called.

"It looks like the truck has overturned so there's a salvage unit righting the truck and a vet that will be assisting them."

Police would send out an update as soon as they knew more.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has asked motorists to delay travel in the area if possible.
