Hamilton police investigating an alleged indecent assault on Friday of a female pedestrian are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Senior Sergeant Karl Thornton said investigators were yet to formally interview the 31-year-old victim but it appears she was attacked by at least three males.

"We understand the woman was walking along Breckons Ave in Nawton some time between 3-3.30am.

"While she was walking a car has pulled up alongside her and the male occupants asked for directions. Before she knew what was happening three men have got out of the car, pushed her to the ground and indecently assault her."

Due to the trauma suffered in the assault and the darkness Mr Thornton said the victim was only able to give a vague description of her attackers.

"She described them as big Maori or Polynesian males who drove off in a dark coloured four-door hatchback car, similar to a Toyota Corolla."
