Keeping thousands of small feet warm this winter is the dream of two charities joining forces for Red Socks Day.
During the next three weeks, the Sir Peter Blake Trust and KidsCan will run a campaign, wear a pair, share a pair. For $10, Kiwis can purchase two pairs ofred socks - one pair to wear on Red Socks Day on July 12 and a pair to share with a KidsCan child in need.
Sir Peter Blake Trust chief executive Shelley Campbell says every year on Red Socks Day people celebrate a time when many people wore red socks, to support the bid by Sir Peter and Team New Zealand to win the America's Cup.
"This year, we wanted to be able to share that story with a new generation of young Kiwis to inspire them to stand tall and dare to achieve their dreams, just like Sir Peter."
Julie Chapman, KidsCan chief executive and a 2008 Sir Peter Blake Trust leadership award winner, says it is fantastic to be working to provide red socks to children at KidsCan schools throughout the country.
"We're hoping Kiwis will again band together for a great cause and buy a pair of red socks, as part of the campaign, as there are so many KidsCan kids who would love a pair of red socks this winter.
"We're excited to be teaming up with the trust to also share with our schools Sir Peter's inspiring story of aiming high and achieving dreams against all odds."
Red socks can be purchased for $10 from www.sirpeterblaketrust.org until July 11. They will be delivered to selected KidsCan schools ahead of Red Socks Day on July 12.
Red Socks Day concludes the annual Sir Peter Blake Trust leadership week, which runs July 5-12. For more details on how schools, community group or organisations can get involved with leadership week events at www.sirpeterblaketrust.org.
