Deep in the Suburbs

Saskia Huggard was sick of traveling to town for good coffee, so she opened her own cafe in "suburbia" — aka Farm Cove, near Pakuranga. Appropriately named The Burbs the cafe is five minutes from home for the former stay-at-home mum of two, the wife of Dizengoff's Mark Huggard.

She says the response since she opened two weeks ago has been great. “It’s basically like my living room — everyone seems to know each other.”

The cafe features a healthy, all-day menu, with highlights including a prawn taco, homemade preserves and gluten-free French toast made with coconut bread.

Head chef is Karan Kumar, who Saskia spotted while he was working at the Espresso Garden Cafe in Mitre 10 Takanini. After some initial control issues, she says she has relinquished the kitchen to the talented chef, who bakes everything himself. Customers are travelling from afar for what they have been labelling “the best scones in Auckland,” she says.
