Whakarewarewa might consider changing Good Friday's name to Lucky Friday after a narrow escape at Puarenga Park against a determined Waikite side yesterday.
In round two of the BOPRU Baywide Premier competition, it looked ominous for Waikite in the opening seconds when their traditional rival regained the kickoff to scorein the corner, taking the earliest of leads, 5-0.
Waikite, unfazed, struck back immediately scoring three tries, built around solid forward play and a huge, mobile pack. On their first half performance, Waikite looked unstoppable.
Whakarewarewa simply had no answers as Waikite took a 17-5 lead into halftime.
After the break, Whakarewarewa scored an early try to draw closer, 17-10.
Waikite then scored again to take a 24-10 lead at the 60-minute mark, seemingly set for an upset win over their old foes.
But momentum finally turned in favour of the gutsy home side asWhakarewarewa's superior fitness meant that in the final quarter they were able to steal a 26-24 win.
