Soccer: Taupo in an upset over Metro

It was a weekend of typical cup football with upsets and tight finishes.

Taupo upset Northern league division one side Metro 2-1 to progress to round two. Tim De Roo gave Taupo a 1-0 lead at the break but Metro levelled the scores. Calum Christie converted a 75th minute penalty to give the home side the win.

Ngongotaha led NRL/1 side Melville United 1-0 at the end of the first half and another upset was on the cards but Melville scored twice to win narrowly 2-1.

The AFC Fury/Whakatane Town clash was expected to be close but Fury stepped up from last week's draw to convincingly beat Whakatane 4-1.

Tauranga Old Blues who lead the WaiBop division one competition met division two leaders HRFC and ran out 5-1 winners while there were 12 goals in the Takapuna Claudelands Rovers game with Takapuna progressing to round two with an 8-4 win.

In other games Lyn Avon defeated Cambridge 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the scores were tied 1-1 after extra time while Waitemata over came Tauranga City 3-0.

There were two WaiBop division one games played, with Rotorua United registering their first win, defeating Melville 2-1 and Matamata Swifts beating Otumoetai 3-1.

United will be thanking their goalkeeper Andrew Gibbson who kept out a number of chances.
