Rotorua's Julia Edward, rowing this season for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre, came home with one medal in each metal from the 2013 New Zealand Rowing Club Championships.
Edward won gold in the Women's Premier Quadruple Sculls in Twizel at the weekend.
She and crewmate Zoe Stevenson were presented red coats for their first New Zealand premier title win. The first-time recipients of Red Coats were delighted. The Waikato RPC crew won in a time of 6:29.88 ahead of Central RPC. The Central RPC crew (made up of two London 2012 Olympians) included Julia's 2012 Olympic Lightweight Double Sculls partner Louise Ayling.
Julia Edward and crewmate Lana Davidson had to be content with silver in the Women's Open Lightweight Double Sculls which was won by Central RPCs Sophie MacKenzie and Louise Ayling (beating their WRPC rivals by 6 seconds).
In the Women's Lightweight Open Single Sculls heat one was taken out by Sophie MacKenzie from Central RPC, but Julia Edward was only a second behind her. In the second heat Edward's 2011 rowing partner Lucy Strack won convincingly. The Open Women's Lightweight Single Sculls was won by Lucy Strack (Southern RPC) who took the title off Edward, the 2012 winner. Julia won the bronze with Sophie MacKenzie (Central RPC) taking silver.
It was a brilliant weekend of success for our other Rotorua rowers.
Jeff Francis rowing for the Waikato Regional Performance won gold in the Men's Under 22 eight oars and the Men's Under 22 coxless Quad Sculls.
Rotorua's young rising star; Claudia Hyde, rowing for the Waikato Regional Performance Centre, did amazing work and was rewarded with two gold medals and two silvers.
One gold in the Women's Under 22 Coxless Quad Sculls and another in the Under 20 Women's Double Sculls. Her silver medals were for the Women's Under 20 Single Scull and the Women's Under 22 Eight Oar events.
Rotorua Rowing Club's newest members, Luke Jenkins and Alex Hyland, won a gold medal in the Senior Men's Double Sculls and a silver in the Men's Club Coxless Quad Sculls. Together with Rotorua's Nigel Van Den Akker, Jenkins and Hyland gained a silver in the Senior Men's Coxless Quad Sculls.
Natalie Hill and Louise Ford, rowing for the Bay Coast Rowing Club, won bronze in the Senior Women's Coxless Quad Sculls.
