Rotorua's Landyn Edwards was in the lead after round one of the Rotorua Open.

Edwards shot a stellar 65 yesterday at Rotorua Golf Club to lead James Devlin and Bailey Smith by one shot. Edwards has won the Rotorua Open once before, in 2010, and he also won the Springfield Open in January.

The Rotorua Open tournament has long been an amateur event but has partnered with the New Zealand PGA Trainee Championship this weekend, giving it a Pro-Am status.

More than 100 golfers are competing in the 2014 Rotorua Open which began yesterday and finishes tomorrow. Round two and three (of four) will be played today at Rotorua Golf Club, with the final round staged tomorrow.

Along with top amateurs from the central and upper North Island, 36 professional trainees have joined the tournament and will be playing for prize money. The trainee professionals are currently undergoing a three-year professional apprenticeship with the New Zealand PGA.
