Two hundred extra spots have opened up in the 2017 Craters Classic after the unique event sold out.

After the initial allocation of 500 spots sold out six weeks ahead of the event collaboration between race organisers and land owners allowed for the expanded field.

Race director Tim Farmer said
they were thrilled with the response.

"There's a real demand for single lap XC style events, and the numbers highlight what we've known for some time. That the Craters of the Moon riding area provides some of the best trails you'll find anywhere for XC style riding.

"It's an ever evolving network, and we're constantly tweaking the course layouts to take in the best of it. The competitors really enjoy that, and its testament to the hard work of Bike Taupo, the Taupo Mountain bike Club, and everyone involved."

Based in the geothermal landscapes of the Wairakei Resort, the Craters Classic takes place on the ever expanding maze of flowing trails that makes up the crater's network.

The event has more than tripled in size in two years and has rapidly developed into one of the must-do events on the New Zealand mountain bike calendar.

On offer are three different event distances. The family friendly 12km, mid-course challenge of 25km, or the feature 35km long course event.

"The Taupo region has some of the highest sales of e-bikes in New Zealand. As an event provider we always try and cater for all parties. For some time, we've been aware of individuals eager to enjoy our event experience, but who have been unable due to medical conditions, or injuries. We hope this addition to the program really removes all barriers to participation," said Mr Farmer.

The 2017 Craters Classic is Sunday June 11 and can be entered Here
