The British & Irish Lions will take on the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians, every New Zealand Super Rugby team, the Maori All Blacks and the All Blacks. The Rotorua match is the fifth of the tour.
Events and Venues operations manager Crispian Stewart said the high demand for tickets to the Rotorua match did not surprise him, as there had been huge interest in the game.
The Lions were last in the city in 2005, playing Bay of Plenty in a packed stadium.
He said a lot of the grandstand ticket sales would have been part of packages for touring supporters, which meant a lot of visitors for the city.
He said indications were more than 20,000 people from the United Kingdom and Ireland would travel to New Zealand for the tour.
Mr Stewart said with the schedule of the three test matches following the Rotorua game being Auckland, Wellington and Auckland again, Rotorua featured as a potential stop over throughout the tour.
He said this all pointed to a busy tourism space in what was usually quite a quiet month in terms of accommodation.
Mr Stewart said he thought the bank tickets would also sell quickly. The atmosphere on the bank would be great to be a part of, he said.
"It will be a sell-out, I'm pretty sure, so get your tickets early."
He said even if people did miss out on tickets festival activities around the week of the game were being looked at which meant there would be plenty happening around the town.
