Raiha Henry and her Tuhoe netball team love Rotorua's annual Kurangaituku tournament so much they cried when they were told they could not compete in both senior weekends.
This year's tournament is so popular the organisers asked the team to forgo the first weekend to allow more out-of-town entries.
They were so upset they cried - and complained. Fortunately for them, a team has pulled out and they're back in the action this Friday and Saturday. And they couldn't be happier.
This weekend is the 73rd annual Kurangaituku Netball Tournament, hailed as the biggest netball event in the Southern Hemisphere. The Tuhoe team are stalwarts of the competition and have entered almost every year for the 40 years they have been together. Mrs Henry may be 66, but she still gets out on the court when her team needs her.
Team captain Jocelyn Callaghan says Mrs Henry still has a pretty accurate shot.
"If we need her, she'll be there."
The team, consisting of hard core members Raiha, Jocelyn, Paere Hunuhunu, Talitha Webster, Sheryldeen Iraia, Matira Te Pania, Crystal Wano and Huri Wano, are all related in some way and are all descendants of Tuhoe.
While most of their players from the past have been Tuhoe, Jocelyn said they didn't discriminate.
"We had a Japanese girl play for us one year."
Nearly 200 teams will compete in the social grades this weekend with about 130 entered next weekend for the more competitive grades and the A Grade title.
The third and final weekend will see 60 intermediate and secondary school teams competing, intermediates for the first time.
The numbers are up for each of the three weekends but organisers aren't exactly sure why.
Normally the first weekend is at the end of August but the tournament was moved back a week to alleviate the pressure on accommodation during the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.
Netball Rotorua's Mary Thompson said it could be that the later dates suited more teams.
"We still had to turn a lot of teams away. More teams means a bit of added pressure in terms of running the tournament but it's great that the interest is still there."
"Every year we wonder if we'll get as many teams as the previous, [what] with the price of petrol and accommodation, but they still keep coming. It's wonderful really."
