It's Premier grade time for Rotorua teams in the Bay of Plenty District Rugby League (BOPDRL) and Coastline combined district competition.

Ngongotaha Chiefs, who qualified for the top grade last weekend, take on Taupo Phoenix Premier at Puketawhero Park while Pikiao Warriors travel to Hickling Park to take on Mangakino Hawks tomorrow. Ngongotaha head coach Jason Walker said he was excited to kick-off the Premier grade but defence needed to improve from the grading rounds.

"I'm so glad we made this level - that's what we were aiming for so that's the first tick done," he said. "It will be a step up for some of these boys - it's a whole different level.

"Our main fall down previously has been letting too many points past the post, lacking in defence had become a common theme so this week we've looked at our defensive end in sets.

"I've pretty much got the team sorted, and I'm feeling confident about the attack - I know that's a strong point for us."

Pikiao showed progression from last season in the grading rounds but did fall to two defeats. Head coach Jason Parata said he was confident his side could challenge for the title this season.

"We're in with a good chance to challenge for the title and I have confidence in the players - we just need to be more consistent and have less errors cropping up," he said.

"We know what everyone is about now so there shouldn't be any surprises but Pacific look very strong and Otumoetai are a class act."
