Less than a week after finishing runner-up at the Danny Lee Springfield Open, Rotorua's Victor Janin has qualified for the New Zealand PGA Tour.

The French-born golfer finished tied for seventh at qualifying school in Taupo yesterday.

The top eight golfers at Q-school earned their tour card for 2014. The qualifying tournament was held across two days at Taupo Golf Club's Centennial course.

Janin is now a professional golfer after playing his final amateur event last weekend in Rotorua.

Meanwhile, Rotorua's Landyn Edwards, who won the Springfield Open last weekend, missed out on his tour card finishing tied for 19th.

A total of 27 golfers attended the New Zealand Q-school which included three rounds of golf held across two days, finishing yesterday.

Janin, 22, is now eligible to play in most of the tournaments on the professional tour this year.

Janin had a solid first round of golf, finishing 11-over par (72, 79 and 76).

Christchurch's Shaun Jones finished first at Q-school with a one-over par total (76, 69 and 72).

Janin said the final two rounds were "pretty windy", which made it tough.

He said he was looking forward to the year ahead on the pro tour.

"It sets me up for the year, I am looking forward to doing something different," he said.

"I want to get myself as high up the order of merit as I can and try and qualify on other tours."

He said he would like to spend a year on the New Zealand tour gaining experience before trying to qualify for bigger pro tours overseas.

Elsewhere, Kiwi Tim Wilkinson sits six shots off the lead after the opening round of the PGA Tour's Humana Challenge in La Quinta, California.

The left-hander opened his season with a three-under 69 to sit in a share of 48th place.

Patrick Reed of the United States leads the tournament by one shot at nine-under after carding a 63, with five birdies coming on the back nine.

Rotorua's Danny Lee is in 129th place at one-over following a round which included three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey.
