Geyser City smash way to first win of WBOPCA championship

Rotorua's Geyser City first XI have secured their first win in the WBOPCA Championship in spectacular fashion.

The local side, who bowled first, had a hard-fought four-wicket victory, in Pool One against gritty Katikati at Fergusson Park, Tauranga, on Saturday.

Geyser City bowled their opposition out for 132 with Sean Ingram impressing - taking four wickets for 28 runs.

The visitors then battled hard in the second innings with the match clinched when Geyser City's Bradley Rumble, 14, smashed a six to take out the encounter in emphatic style.

Geyser City batsman Kane Vanner was also a standout, posting an impressive 45.

It was a much-needed win for the Rotorua team after their hefty eight-wicket loss against Lake Taupo CC.

The result leaves Geyser City in fourth place in Pool One on 23 points.

Meanwhile, in Pool One, favourites Lake Taupo remain unbeaten after a narrow win over Sikh Sports at home.

In the first innings the Western Bay Indian representatives hit 158 runs, with Taupo bowler Nick Field in top form taking five for 35. The home side then had to work hard at the crease for a two-wicket victory.

Lake Taupo are joined at the top by Tauranga Boys' College after they posted 203/8 and then bowled R&A Sangha out for 155.

Whakatane United laid down the challenge to the other Western Bay Plenty Reserve Grade championship contenders in Pool Two, beating top seeds Greerton by three wickets at home.

Defending champions Te Puke remain unbeaten in their title defence after a six-wicket win against long-time rivals Mount Maunganui at home while Cadets posted a solid five-wicket win over Aquinas College.

WBOPCA Western Bay of Plenty reserve grade results:

Pool One:

Katikati 132 (Ben Warren 45, Sean Ingram 4/31, Liam Kelly 3/28) lost to Geyser 137/6 (Kane Vanner 45).

Sikh Sports 158 (Nick Field 5/35) lost to Lake Taupo CC 159/8.

Tauranga Boys' College 203/8 (Jacob Logan 60, Tasman Carsons 42no, Vik Tiwari 3/23, RD Banga 3/41) defeated R&A Sangha 155 (Rhys Donaghy 4/30, Jacob Logan 4/22).

Pool Two:

Cadets 284/5 (Ben McCalgan 74, Ben Donald 72, Cameron Dunn 32no, Nick Rendall 30, Kersley Corder 38no) defeated Aquinas 167 (Andrew Randrup 72, Josh Christensen 4/45).

Mount Maunganui 189 (Nathan Byrnes 90, Justin Scott 3/36, Supreet Singh 5/36) lost to Te Puke 190/4 (Vaughan Wilson 70no, Denym Clarke 34, Nathan Walker 3/27).

Greerton 157 (Sam Brown 64, Vishal Mani 26) lost to Whakatane United 160/7 (Alex Yates 44, Ruan Simonsen 36, Pip Thickpenny 32no).
