Football: College chases victory to avoid the drop

The Waibop Federation football league title may be decided but who drops down to division two won't be resolved until tomorrow.

The fate of Tauranga Boys' College will be decided when they take on Whakatane Town at Rex Morpeth Park.

After beating Otorohanga 3-0 on Wednesday, the Tauranga side are desperate to maintain a spot in next year's division one. A win against Whakatane will give Tauranga Boys' that opportunity.

However, Whakatane are also desperate for the win to overtake Ngongotaha who sit fifth in the competition.

In an ironic twist if Tauranga manage to beat Whakatane it will mean last year's division one winners Old Blues will be relegated to division two.

Otumoetai managed to jump ahead of Melville United on Wednesday, after they beat division two-bound Otorohanga. It has been a long hard season for the team who are a foundation team of the league. The club lost key players and the results have reflected on the team who could manage only one win all season.

Otorohanga netted just 16 goals but conceded 80 in their 22 appearances this season.

Division one winners Taupo, who dropped only three points all season, were head and shoulders above every other team, while Claudelands Rovers were clearly second best. Both sides now have the option of playing off for a spot in the Northern League.

The WaiBop Federation season winds up with the "All Stars" game which will be played at Ngongotaha on October 8, followed by the trophy presentations.
